U comme Urbain, Usines, Union...































Lettre U : U comme Urbain
Deux églises de Troyes portent le nom d'un pape Urbain. L'église Saint-Urbain pour le pape Urbain II (1044-1099), Eudes de Latigny qui lança la Première Croisade et l'église Saint-Pantaléon pour le pape Urbain IV ( né à Troyes en 1200 sous le nom de Jacques Pantaléon et mort à Pérouse en 1264).
U comme usines, Troyes a été un important centre industriel, notamment dans l'industrie de la bonneterie, elle était la capitale de la maille. Les usines ont fermées, sont devenues des friches industrielles et font les beaux jours des promoteurs immobiliers.
U comme Union ( trade unions, syndicats), la Bourse du travail qui hébergeait les syndicats va être réaménagées en centre commercial.
U as Urban. Troyes is linked to two popes Urban with two churhes :
Urban II who promotes the First Crusade (église St Urbain), Urban IV, born in Troyes in 1200 and named Jacques Pantaleon ( église St Pantaleon).
U like the French word "usines" for facories. Troyes was "la capitale de la maille", with mlany factories for hosiery. Thet are closed nowadays and some of them have been transformed in appartment buildings.
U like Union, Trade Union, the house win which the Trade Unions used to be lodged will become a commercial area.

Great photos! and words for U-day. I always had a complete lesson on how to pronounce the letter U in French with my students. It's a difficult sound for English speaking people.
